AREDS2 Trial

5/23/2013

The AREDS2 trial has recently reported its findings in the literature. A summary can be found here and more information about the trial can be found at the AREDS2 website here.

What the study group suggests is that beta carotene provides no clinically significant benefit in their study population and in smokers is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. They also report no benefit from omega-3 supplementation.  Finally, the quantity of zinc (which often causes stomach upset in higher doses) which may provide a benefit is unknown.

We therefore recommend that an AREDS2 formulation of ocular multivitamin for age-related macular degeneration is now used.
